If you read the brochures that so many Reflexologists print out these days, you won’t have to pick up too many to find most Reflexologists are selling Reflexology. Well, that sounds pretty reasonable doesn’t it? Or, hmm, does it? Let’s zoom in a bit and take a closer look. The size of the market, albeit a growing one, for people wanting to pay good money for Reflexology is questionable. Sure, some people will say that’s what they want. perhaps that’s true, but is it what they really want? Because I’ve learned that for most people Reflexology is not what they really want.
So, the question is what do people really want? And, are Reflexologists selling it?
Well, for the most part nearly everybody these days is stressed. I mean really stressed. And the variety of symptoms of stress create dis-ease. People aren’t feeling well. So, people want to feel better. Period. It doesn’t matter what ails them. They’re just not feeling as good as they want to be.
Here’s proof. Ask anybody “how are you?”. After they answer, ask again, and again for three consecutive times. The first two responses will usually be the obligatory “fine”. But what does that mean? By the third asking of this question, a good number of people may feel you really care and will provide you with a plethora of the gory details. In some cases you may even wish you stopped at the first or second questions, smiled knowingly and moved on.
Their problem is there not feeling as good as they want to and they are hoping someone or something can resolve this problem.
I will borrow these words that I love so much from Barack Obama, one week before his 2008 presidential victory in America, as he inspired millions while speaking in Ohio said “We can choose hope over fear and together we’ll change this country and we will change the world.”
And that’s what we as Reflexologists are selling. We have the ability to provide our clients with Hope to inspire them to feel better. And, that’s how we change the world one person at a time.
And, that is how we include mind, body and spirit in our practice.
PS – On your Reflexology brochures, if you sell – “Want to Feel Better” you may have no shortage of clients.
I understand what your saying. Most people don’t really even know what reflexolgy is but everyone is stressed to the maxs. The great thing for the client is that they don’t have to run a marathon to feel better. They get to relax and rest and heal. What I find interesting is that both you and Lauren from what I understand got into reflexology for your own health reasons. So you both started out as recipients of reflexology and the healing must of been so profound as to direct your lives by it. Is this right? Wow.
Hi Antoinette,
Thanks for your comments. In my case, Reflexology was brought to me through inspiration. At some point during class I may find the opportunity to explain further.
