excerpts from Nexus Magazine article by Sally Fallon Morell and Ramiel Nagel
From this article some astounding facts surfaced. Here’s a summary.
1. High Fructose Corn Syrup – entered the marketplace in 1970 and within 20 years accounted for over 1/2 the sweeteners used in the US food supply.
(No wonder corn has become the crop of choice by US farmers, Jack)
2. Between 1970 and 2000, the per capita consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup in the US increased from less than one pound per person to over 60 pounds yearly.
(This is astounding! During our Reflexology classes we quote the deleterious effects of sugar consumption based on the statistic that the average American consumes 5 pounds of sugar annually by 1900, and by 2000 personal sugar consumption rose to nearly 150 pounds, Jack)
3. Large amounts of fructose in the diet rapidly turn into fatty acids which are then stored as fat or released into the bloodstream as triglycerides. Refined fructose sweeteners are primarily converted into triglycerides and adipose tissue (body fat).
4. Obese people who drank a fructose-sweetened beverage with a meal had triglyceride levels almost 200% higher than obese people who drank a glucose-sweetened beverage with a meal.
The article provides similar problems with Agave nectar. Which is even more insidious because Agave nectar is sold as a “health food”!
