My Personal Story of Arthritis & Reflexology

The greying of us Baby Boomers means many of us are now meeting challenges from our lifestyle choices when we were younger.    For me one of my challenges happened well before any greying of my hair.  As an athlete for much of my life I learned early that I was expected to play hurt.  Many of us wore our injuries like badges of honour while we “sucked it up” and played through an assortment of nagging conditions.

My years of playing high school football meant scores of minor and occasional major injuries.  One that I remember so well but thought very little of was every football season all of my fingers would swell up and remain swollen until the season was over.  When they got really bad in game conditions I would tape my fingers together but loose enough so I could grip the running backs around the legs and bring them down with a thundering tackle.

Fast forward to my thirties.  I developed ongoing aches, pains, swellings and disfigurement on my first knuckle joints in all my fingers except the little ones and also my thumbs.  So much so that I couldn’t wear rings.  Even the slightest toch on my knuckle really hurt.  I had arthritis and it was painful every day!

In my late 40s inspiration took hold of me (that’s another story) and I changed careers from corporate executive to Reflexology.  But wait, that meant I had to move from a desk job to working with my thumbs and fingers.  Oh Oh!  I found this transition very difficult.  The pain in my fingers and thumbs became very challenging for me.  Especially when applying the Reflexology techniques I was learning.

However, the determination I learned to be successful in sports and business paid off and I continued practicing Reflexology.  Maybe a year after I was a Reflexologist and working in my clinic I began to notice that I no longer had pain, aches or swelling in my fingers and thumbs.  The arthritis had disappeared.  I could wear rings on my fingers and do Reflexology sessions free of any aches in my hands.

That’s right Reflexology relieved all the symptoms of my arthritis.  Now, as great as this is, I have no scientific explanation, remember that I was performing Reflexology on others and not receiving Reflexology!  Since our fingers are loaded with Reflexology points I got a Reflexology session whenever I gave a Reflexology session!  Add to this that when I perform Reflexology my intent is to relieve aches and pains and stresses.

The side effects of performing Reflexology has been to relieve all my symptoms of arthritis!

I’m always looking for win-win solutions, so how’s this – my clients win from receiving Reflexology and are always so thankful following each session.  I win by feeling better and healthier by giving the Reflexology session.  I also win by my clients feeling better, so emotionally I am in a better place.  And, they pay me handsomely so I earn a fantastic living as a Professional Reflexologist.

    Hi Shery,
Absolutely. It was strange, I didn’t even notice that the pain was gone until I realized one day I was pain free. No drugs, no prescriptions of any kind, no rubs – just doing Reflexology on my clients.

Cool story and your own testimony. I was wondering about pain in the fingers in this career. I took one short intro tease class in massage school. I have double jointed fingers, which concerns me. It’s so fascinating how the organs are reflected in the feet. :)
