I just read an article about a dog’s life is a recession-proof tale. It brings back my memories of over 25 years ago. I was marketing a strata titled building in Vancouver’s popular west end. I turned away so many people because of its pet restrictions. So many that I considered developing an entire condominium complex just for people with pets. I believed this project would be sold out as a pre-sale and my fortune would be golden. Didn’t do it. I fell into the same trap I teach my Reflexology business students – opportunities knock and if you don’t answer they’re gone.
That’s right this article is about family pets – an emerging new market for Reflexology and Reiki. Most important for you to understand is that the pet is considered a loving family member. Now, if you’ve got that, then consider these unbelievable market statistics.
It’s estimated that pets live in 61% of American households and pet owners will spend about $45.4 billion on their pets this year, according to the American Pet Products Association.
Don’t read any further until you get that. Pet owners in America will spend approximately $45.4 billion on their pets in a recession! Remember these are in fact recession days when perfectly good houses in Detroit are advertised for sale at only $10,000! Have I got your attention yet?
Dog owners and local businesses are creating networks of dog-friendly businesses who are promoting events such as “Yappy Hour” where dog owners and their pets socialize over cocktails at local establishments.
Have you noticed the amount of doggy care businesses emerging? Some locations are now one-stop shopping where dog owners can take the family’s pooch for doggie daycare, get it groomed, have acupuncture or Reiki performed to relieve canine stress and pick up its favourite brand of food.
Am I alone in this or are you seeing a new opportunity for your stress relieving business?

First of all, to persue the business, of reflexing any kind of pet, one would have to have common knowledge of all the meridians in the pets physical anatomy, and physic. Surely this could be a wide open market, for anyone passionate to go ahead, and explore and study in this field. This would represent a true learning curve, since it involves animals.
I love dogs! I’m goin go look into this further. Thanks for putting me in the right direction for my life. Jill
