Alternative meds boom

Natural treatments such as St. John’s Wort and acupuncture are enjoying a boom after shaking off their “wacko cures” image.  the industry is now worth £213 million a year – up 18% in two  years.  Analysts Mintel predict a further 33% rise to £282 million by 2014.

Reflexology, aromatherapy and ayurveda, which includes yoga, have a ll benefitted from the rise in stress levels brought on by the recession, analysts believe.

Mintel said: “Now acupuncture is available on the NHS, it may open the floodgates.”
